The Weeking #3

The Weeking #3

Two great articles, one toy that goes BOING!

How Math Broke Media by Doug Shapiro

A really interesting take on how changes in both distribution (streaming) and production (AI) have broken models describing what media is, how it works, how it earns, etc...

...that is poised to change the underlying logic of media in almost every way: how it is defined, developed, created, distributed, marketed, funded, and monetized. Given the scope of this change, it is understandably hard for people to get their heads around it, especially those who have been in and around the media business for a long time. Like I said, the more immersed, the deeper the mental grooves.

Signs of AI Writing by the editors of Wikipedia

Can you tell when something has been generated by AI? That felt fairly easy three years ago, but feels a lot harder now. Wikipedia - which has to deal with a lot of 'slop', and tolerates none of it - publishes an excellent guide...

This is a list of writing and formatting conventions typical of AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, with real examples taken from Wikipedia articles and drafts. It is a field guide to help detect undisclosed AI-generated content on Wikipedia. This list is descriptive, not prescriptive; it consists of observations, not rules.

BOING! by greg.technology

The nicest little web toy you'll play with this week. Very satisfying.

Back again with another Weeking - next week!
